Purpose of Foundation
Purpose of founding NSDIPA

The Geographic Information System Association published a "Recommendation Paper concerning Servicing of Social Infrastructure for Spatial Data" on January 31, 1995, with the following contents.

Recommendations

Spatial data should be recognized for the role it performs as a social asset, and its servicing and distribution, particularly the spheres considered important as social infrastructure, should effectively and promptly be promoted as a national undertaking.

An organization or a system with the following functions should be established within the government to resolve various legislative, administrative and technical issues associated with its servicing.
.

1. Comprehensive coordination of the types and natures of spatial data that should be serviced as social infrastructure
  2. Establishment of a standard format to express the contents of the above-mentioned spatial data.
  3. Comprehensive coordination concerning distribution and usage (including establishment of an electronic network) of the above-mentioned spatial data.
  4. Various works pertaining to a smooth servicing of spatial data that should be set up as social infrastructure.

The objective of NSDIPA is to carry out activities to seek involvement by the government, local governments and various organizations in the realization of these issues related to spatial data, and to promote furtherance of industrial economy through a general utilization of information on national spatial data infrastructure.

The association is striving towards realization of its objectives through various activities, such as collection of information from both in and outside Japan, by establishing closer links with various relevant organizations, and by providing a place of information exchange to participating organizations.
